Side Dish

Nowadays, many Koreans eat banchan (aka side dishes) that are made with non traditional Korean ingredients. I will show you how to make a simple and diet friendly broccoli salad. Because this salad is very simple, it’s recommended to get the best quality ingredients as possible.

2 cups whole broccoli
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup cashews (salted or unsalted)
1/4 cup poppy seed dressing (substitute: can use 1/2 cup mayo + 1/6 cup sugar + 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar)


1. Cut up the broccoli into small chunks
2. Crush the cashews using a bowl and mortar
3. Add broccoli, raisins, and cashews in a bowl
4. Add the poppy seed dressing
5. Stir well and refrigerate for at least 25 minutes


Voila! This recipe is very simple to prepare and takes just minutes. This is popular as a side dish but can also be eaten as a standalone salad. The sugar content isn’t so high, and you get lots of vegetables to fill up your daily need.

The salad is both filling with just the right amount of sweet and tartness. I’ve heard of people even adding some bacon or kale which may even enhance the already amazing flavor. Eating vegetables without cooking them helps to keep the original nutrients and vitamins. This dish is even liked by the pickiest eater since the broccoli flavor is reduced by the sweetness of the raisins and the buttery flavor of cashews. I’m a firm believer that food is meant to be made with love and can bring any people together. As I usually tell people, cook from the heart, and the food will always be delicious.
